Can I “Decree” or “Command” My Blessings?
“Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” – Romans 11:35
The idea that a human being can “decree” blessings to God comes from a distorted view of the relationship between Creator and creature. God is not the servant of man, but the sovereign Lord of all things. The Bible affirms that no one can demand or force anything from God, because everything comes from Him and through Him. When a person “decrees” something to God, they act as if they have authority over the Almighty — which is spiritually dangerous and contrary to the humility that the Christian faith requires.
Jesus taught us the opposite of this mindset when He said: “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:10. Authentic Christian prayer is submissive, reverent, and trusting in God’s sovereign will — not a command. He knows what is best for us, and the true believer learns to trust His guidance, even when it does not match their immediate desires.
Furthermore, God does not respond to the voice of man as if He were an obedient servant, but acts according to His wisdom and eternal purpose. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. Therefore, instead of decreeing, we should pray in faith, wait patiently, and live in obedience, recognizing that the greatest blessing has already been given to us in Christ: eternal salvation.
