Lemos na bíblia em Mateus 16:18
“Pois também eu te digo que tu és Pedro, e sobre esta pedra edificarei a minha igreja, e as portas do inferno não prevalecerão contra ela;”
No versículo citado Cristo faz um jogo de palavras “… tu és petrus …” (petrus = pequeno bloco rochoso) “… sobre esta petra …” (petra = grande rocha de esquina / fundamento da construção / Cristo). Veja que Cristo deixa claro que Pedro é uma pequena parte da igreja que é fundamentada nele, isto é, em Cristo que é a grande rocha de fundação e sustentação do cristianismo.
Segundo o catolicismo o Papa seria um substituto de Jesus Cristo aqui na terra, uma ligação entre Deus e a humanidade. Esta visão está errada, Cristo não tem substitutos. Temos acesso diretamente a Deus através de Cristo que, por intermédio de seu sacrifício na cruz, construiu novamente a ponte entre o homem e Deus.
Pedro, Paulo e os demais discípulos de Cristo tiveram seu papel essencial na história da propagação do cristianismo mas, nenhum deles poderia ser considerado substituto de Cristo. Não precisamos de ninguém que faça essa intermediação pois, temos acesso a Deus em Jesus. Você pode falar com o Senhor em oração agora mesmo se quiser e, ele ouvirá você. Basta ter fé. Você crê?

Was Peter the First Pope?
We read in the bible in Matthew 16:18
“For I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it;”
In the quoted verse Christ plays with words “… you are petrus …” (petrus = small rocky block) “… on this petra …” (petra = large corner rock / foundation of the building / Christ). See that Christ makes it clear that Peter is a small part of the church that is founded on him, that is, on Christ who is the great foundation and support rock of Christianity.
According to Catholicism the Pope would be a substitute for Jesus Christ here on earth, a link between God and humanity. This view is wrong, Christ has no substitutes. We have direct access to God through Christ who, through his sacrifice on the cross, rebuilt the bridge between man and God.
Peter, Paul and the other disciples of Christ played their essential role in the history of the spread of Christianity, but none of them could be considered a substitute for Christ. We don’t need anyone to do this intermediation because we have access to God in Jesus. You can speak to the Lord in prayer right now if you want and He will hear you. Just have faith. You believe?
