What Does It Mean to Take Up One’s Own Cross?
“And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” – Luke 14:27
See what it says in Luke 9:23: “Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.’”
Taking up one’s cross each day does not simply mean enduring the difficulties, problems, or illnesses of this life. It is important to remember that adversities serve to draw us closer to God and so that His power may be perfected in our weaknesses.
Taking up one’s cross means considering oneself dead to this world and to the appeals it offers; it means understanding that we are separated from the corruption of the world and from sin, and that we are servants of Christ; it means that the will which must always prevail is God’s will first and foremost.
