What Does It Really Mean to Be Born Again?
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:3
To be born again is not to change religion nor merely improve behavior; it is a transformation performed by God. When someone believes in Jesus, they receive a new spiritual life. The Bible affirms that this change comes from the Holy Spirit, not from human effort. See what it says in Titus 3:5: Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.
To be born again is to receive a new identity in Christ. The person remains the same individual, but now lives with new values, new desires, and a new purpose. See what it says in 2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Finally, the one who is born of the Spirit begins to seek to please God and to produce fruit that reflects this new life. It is not perfection, but direction: a daily walk with God. See what it says in Hosea 6:3: Let us know, let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord.
